Empowering a Clean-Energy Future for Western Massachusetts

The Berkshire Innovation Center’s Clean Energy Leadership Group (CELG) is a regional coalition of business, academic, and civic leaders working to make clean, reliable, and affordable energy available to all. CELG’s mission is to position the Berkshires as an integral part of the Commonwealth’s clean-energy economy—linking local innovation, workforce talent, and infrastructure to statewide initiatives in renewable generation, grid resiliency, and sustainable manufacturing.

Through collaborative planning, demonstration projects, and community engagement, CELG is helping Western Massachusetts lead the transition to a resilient, low-carbon future.

Key Initiatives

Microgrid at the William Stanley Business Park

CELG is leading development of a microgrid at the Berkshire Innovation Center and the surrounding William Stanley Business Park in Pittsfield. The project integrates solar generation, battery storage, and advanced controls to deliver reliable, low-cost, and resilient power to current and future park tenants. It also serves as a living demonstration platform where emerging clean-energy technologies can be tested and showcased—supporting startups and researchers working on distributed generation, smart-grid management, and innovative storage systems. This initiative positions the Berkshires as a proving ground for next-generation grid solutions that can be replicated across Massachusetts.

Startup and Innovation Ecosystem Support

CELG connects climatetech and clean-energy startups with local manufacturers, research partners, and funding opportunities through the Berkshire Innovation Center’s programs and the MassCEC Innovation Ecosystem grant. These efforts accelerate technology commercialization, workforce training, and regional business growth—ensuring that Western Massachusetts plays a visible role in the state’s clean-energy corridor.

Policy and Legislative Engagement

CELG works closely with local and state leaders to shape policies that enable clean-energy deployment in Western Massachusetts—such as microgrid legislation, Climate Bank development, and community-based initiatives that expand access and affordability.

Networking and Collaboration

CELG builds community among the region’s clean-energy stakeholders through public events, panel discussions, podcasts, and a monthly newsletter. These programs share knowledge, celebrate regional achievements, and create new connections among entrepreneurs, researchers, and policymakers—strengthening collaboration across the Berkshires’ growing clean-energy ecosystem.
